Sandra Hughes Missing in Sierra National Forest
Sandra Hughes, age 59, vanished over the 4th of July weekend, 2020, while camping in the Johnsons Meadow area of the Sierra National Forest—roughly ten miles south of Yosemite. She was last seen leaning against a tree along Forest Road 5S01.
Sandra had recently moved from Maui to California in June 2020. Family members said she was camping in the forest to quarantine, as she may have been exposed to COVID‑19 during her move. Sandra was known to be independent, nomadic, and comfortable living alone. She had been married twice, had no children, and was physically and mentally fit.
She stood 5'3", weighed around 150 lbs, and had brown hair and brown eyes.
The events surrounding her disappearance are strange from the very beginning.
Last Known Contact
Sandra last spoke with her family on June 26th, 2020.
On July 5th, forest officials discovered her campsite—and immediately knew something was wrong. They described it as being in “total disarray.” Her belongings and documents were scattered everywhere.
Her niece, Ashley Marcus, wrote on Facebook that Sandra was extremely tidy. She would never leave her camp in that condition. Even a single piece of litter bothered her.
Something—or someone—had disturbed that camp.
Car Found Crashed
The next day, July 6th, Sandra’s silver Saab was found in Chiquito Creek, north of her campsite. It appeared to have hit a tree at under 20 mph before rolling into the ravine.
Crashing at 20 mph is difficult unless:
- She swerved to avoid something
- She was startled
- Or something forced her off the road
If you see something in your path, your instinct is to jerk the wheel. That’s exactly what this crash looks like.
Further Items Found
On July 12th, her sleeping bag was found 2.5 miles north of the crash site—just inside the Yosemite National Park boundary.
By July 19th, the search was scaled back to a limited continuous search.
Then, on August 9th, two hunters reported seeing Sandra along Road 5S01 near Portuguese Creek. She appeared thinner, was wearing overalls and a floral shirt, and was leaning against a tree, drinking water. She did not approach them and did not appear distressed.
This is the last confirmed sighting of Sandra Hughes.
The case went cold until July 21st, 2021, when a family reported a bizarre “ghost‑like” sighting in the Madera County mountains.
Family Reports Woman Lying Face Down
Jake and Victoria Gorba were driving to Shuteye Peak with their three children. While stopped for lunch, their three‑year‑old son, Kaiden, began talking to someone they couldn’t see.
He pointed toward a meadow and said a woman was lying face down with her legs straight up in the air. She couldn’t speak. She needed help.
His parents were understandably shaken.
Kaiden described the woman as wearing a black shirt. He later identified Sandra from missing‑person posters.
But Sandra was last seen wearing a floral shirt, and she had no spare clothing with her. The meadow was searched by both the family and the sheriff’s office. Nothing was found.
A paranormal encounter? A child’s imagination? A coincidence?
Whatever it was, it didn’t bring investigators any closer to Sandra.

Let’s assume she made camp, then drove toward the Chiquito Trailhead. On the way, she crashes into a tree, exits the vehicle, and becomes lost—eventually ending up just inside the Yosemite border. She loses her sleeping bag, continues north, and is later seen by hunters near Portuguese Creek.
But that doesn’t explain:
- Why was her camp ransacked
- Why were her belongings scattered
- Why didn’t she ask the hunters for help
- How she survived for over a month
- What she was eating
- Why was she described as noticeably thinner
- Why didn’t she return to her car or camp
If someone rifled through her camp looking for valuables, why didn’t she tell the hunters? Why didn’t she seek help? By then she would have been starving.
Sandra is almost certainly deceased now. But the questions remain:
- What forced her off the road?
- Who—or what—ransacked her camp?
- How did her sleeping bag end up in Yosemite?
- Why didn’t she approach the hunters?
- And where is she now?
This is one of the strangest disappearances in the Sierra National Forest.

So where did Sandra go?
And what was she doing roaming the forest when the hunters saw her? By that point, she had been away from her camp for 35 days, and without her sleeping bag for 28 days. She wasn’t known to have food with her. She would have had to cover miles of rugged terrain.
That’s assuming she was the one who left the sleeping bag in Yosemite.
But before we even get to that, we have the campsite and the vehicle.
