Walter Reinhard Missing in Yosemite
Walter Reinhard vanished from the White Wolf area of Yosemite National Park on 19 September 2002. He was 66 years old, 5'8", 145 pounds, and a Vietnam veteran from Oro Valley. Walter was exceptionally experienced in the outdoors—he had completed survival training, served two tours in Vietnam, and later worked as a deputy. After retiring, he stayed active by hiking. A sign on his front door read simply: “Gone Hiking.”
According to his family, Walter arrived in Yosemite on 17 September at 4:11 PM, something they confirmed through credit‑card records. His card was last used on 19 September at a motel inside the park. His cousin later said, “As a Marine with two tours of duty and training in survival, he would come out on his fingernails—if he could.”
The family questioned whether foul play might be involved. Park Rangers said they saw no indication of that. In fact, they saw no indication of Walter at all. As his cousin put it: “We really don’t know what went on, but we know something must be seriously wrong.”
Walter’s vehicle was found the same day he was reported missing, parked at the White Wolf Trailhead. He has never been found.

This one is difficult to interpret. Walter was fit, healthy, and extremely capable—exactly the kind of person who should have been able to handle trouble on the trail. That alone suggests something serious happened. A fall, a sudden medical emergency—both are possible. But if that were the case, why has nothing ever been found?
Search dogs picked up nothing. No clothing, no gear, no remains have surfaced in more than two decades. Another experienced outdoorsman was swallowed by Yosemite without a trace.
