Richard Judd Missing in Yosemite
Richard Judd, age 69, vanished in Yosemite National Park on 25 July 2021. He was hiking with a partner at the time. Judd is 5'11", around 150 lbs, and was last seen wearing a blue shirt, grey pants, and using white trekking poles. He carried a navy blue day pack.
Richard and his hiking partner had set up camp near Lower Merced Pass Lake. On the day he disappeared, the pair set out on a day hike toward Red Peak Pass. Their vehicle was reportedly parked at the Quartz Mountain Trailhead.
That detail immediately stands out.
Because this is the same region where Sandra Johnsen Hughes crashed her car, abandoned her campsite, and spent over a month wandering the forest before vanishing entirely.
Two Disappearances, Same Woods

Judd’s route literally passes the area where Hughes’ sleeping bag was found.
He walked right through the same corridor where Hughes was last known to be moving.

As of the 4th August 2021, the search for both Richard Judd and Sandra Hughes has been reduced to a limited continuous status. No new sightings. No new evidence. No new leads. Two people, one year apart, both moving through the same remote corridor of the Sierra National Forest—both gone.
Nothing connects them officially. But the geography does. And the timing does. And the silence does.

This is one of those cases where the official narrative—“he wandered off and got lost”—doesn’t sit comfortably with the facts.
Here’s what stands out:
1. He vanished on a known trail with a partner nearby.
This wasn’t a solo bushwhack. It was a routine day hike. Judd was experienced enough to handle the terrain.
2. He disappeared suddenly.
No distress call. No sign of injury. No gear left behind. No tracks. No clothing. Nothing.
3. He vanished in the same corridor where Sandra Hughes was last seen.
Hughes’ sleeping bag was found just off the same route Judd walked. She was last seen alive near Portuguese Creek, north of Judd’s path. Her car crash, her ransacked camp, her month‑long wandering… all in the same slice of forest.
4. Both searches turned up nothing.
Not a scrap of fabric. Not a trekking pole. Not a boot print. Not a bone. Not a clue.
For two disappearances in the same region, that’s rare. Very rare.
5. The terrain doesn’t erase people.
This isn’t the Grand Canyon. This isn’t a glacier. This isn’t a river gorge. This is forest, ridges, and granite—terrain where remains should eventually surface.
But they haven’t.
So what are the scenarios?
Here are the possibilities—none of them are comfortable:
• Medical event
Possible, but unlikely to leave zero trace.
• Fall into a hidden crevice or drainage
Possible, but SAR teams covered the drainages extensively.
• Animal predation
Predators don’t erase backpacks, trekking poles, or clothing.
• Wrong‑place, wrong‑time encounter
Human or otherwise. This region has a history of strange disappearances.
• Same unknown factor that affected Sandra Hughes
Whatever forced Hughes off the road, scattered her camp, and sent her wandering for a month… could it have crossed paths with Judd?
• Something else entirely
When two people vanish in the same woods, a year apart, with no trace, you have to consider the possibility that the explanation isn’t simple.
