Robert S. Willis Vanished From Dinky Creek
Robert S. Willis, age 37, vanished from the Dinky Creek area of the Sierra National Forest in late October 2008. The last confirmed sighting of Willis was on October 31st, 2008. He had left home to go deer hunting and was expected back the next day.
Willis was 5'10", around 180 lbs, and was last seen wearing:
- a camouflage‑print Harris Construction jacket
- blue jeans
- size 8 hunting boots
- gloves
- a camouflage baseball cap
He was an experienced hunter and had camping gear, food, and water with him.
The Search for Robert Willis
When Willis failed to return home after one night, his family reported him missing to the Fresno County Sheriff’s Department. A search was not initiated immediately—an error that likely cost valuable time.
Search and rescue finally began on Monday, November 3rd.
Willis’s vehicle—a grey and black 2000 Nissan Frontier—was found at:
37° 4'30.21"N, 119° 6'40.85"W
His family did not expect his truck to be in that area.
On November 4th, reports came in of several gunshots heard near Exchequer Meadow. Search teams were flown in by helicopter to investigate. SAR teams were working at elevations between 7,000 and 8,000 feet.
On November 5th, another hunter reported speaking with Willis on the morning of November 1st. The sighting is unconfirmed, but the witness was adamant:
“I ran into him on Saturday morning and we chatted for a few minutes on the trail… He was wearing a green jacket with the long heavy goatee.”
If true, this would place Willis alive after the last confirmed sighting.
Search Called Off
By November 8th, the search had expanded dramatically:
- 70 searchers
- 2 helicopters
- 1 fixed‑wing aircraft
- multiple jeeps and ground teams
The search area covered 100 square miles.
But the weather turned. Rain and snow hit the mountains, making conditions dangerous and reducing visibility.
On November 13th, The Fresno Bee reported the search had been suspended:
“Prospects for finding him diminish as mountain temperatures turn colder.”
Family members continued searching on foot and by vehicle. Other hunters joined in. Nothing was found.
A renewed search in June 2014 also produced no clues.

The fact that no gear, no clothing, no weapon, no remains, and no trace of Willis has ever been found—despite multiple searches over the years—makes this case deeply unsettling.
He vanished in a region where people do not simply disappear without leaving something behind.
