Frances Brown Vanished While Picking Mushrooms in British Columbia
Frances Brown, age 53, disappeared on October 14th, 2017, while mushroom picking in a remote area west of Highway 16, between Smithers and Hazelton, British Columbia. She had some experience in the wilderness and was carrying rain gear, hiking gear, and a lighter.
Frances became separated from her companion — the point of separation — and was never seen again.
Her companion reported her missing the same day.
The Search for Frances Brown
A large‑scale search began immediately, involving:
- ground teams
- three air teams
- RCMP
- local volunteers
Early in the search, RCMP stated they had found “some clues”, but never clarified what those clues were. They also noted that despite the worsening weather — snow and rain — there were sheltered areas in the forest where someone could “hunker down” and stay dry.
Searchers did find evidence of a campfire, suggesting Frances may have survived for at least part of the first night.
But after eight days, the official search was scaled back. A private search continued for some time, but no further evidence was ever recovered.
Frances Brown has never been found.

Sighs.
Look at Frances’ photo. The first things that come to mind are warmth, kindness, and compassion. She looks like someone who loved deeply and was loved deeply in return. Her family must be living in a kind of grief most of us can’t even imagine — the grief of no answers.
It’s one thing to lose someone. It’s another to lose someone without a trace.
This case bears the classic signature of a point-of-separation disappearance: one moment she was there, and the next, she was gone. These are the cases that haunt this site the most, because they defy the basic logic of wilderness search and rescue.
We don’t have enough detail to map her exact route. We don’t know the precise location of the separation. We don’t know what the RCMP’s “clues” were. All we know is that Frances walked into the forest to pick mushrooms and never came back out.
How does a woman with gear, experience, and a lighter vanish in an area that was searched by air and ground?
It shouldn’t be possible. And yet here we are again.
Another featured case. Another person who was there one moment and gone the next.
