Brandon Swanson — Vanished While on the Phone to His Parents
Cases like this are the ones that get under your skin. How can someone be here one moment and gone the next — especially while on the phone with their parents?
Brandon Swanson, 19, disappeared in the early hours of May 14, 2008. It was the end of the spring semester, and he had been out celebrating with classmates from Minnesota West Community and Technical College’s Canby campus. Friends said he had a few drinks but was not intoxicated.
Around midnight, Brandon left the gathering to drive his Chevrolet Lumina back home to Marshall. He chose the back roads — a decision that would become central to the mystery. At some point on the drive, Brandon accidentally drove into a ditch. The car wasn’t damaged, and he wasn’t hurt, but he couldn’t get the vehicle out.
Brandon Calls His Parents
Brandon phoned his parents and explained the situation. He believed he was near the town of Lynd, southwest of Marshall. His parents drove out to find him, and Brandon stayed by his car, periodically flashing his headlights to help them locate him.
They never saw the lights.
Eventually, Brandon said he would walk toward what he thought were the lights of Lynd and told his parents to meet him in the parking lot of a local bar. They stayed on the phone with him as he walked.
Then, shortly after 2:30 AM, Brandon suddenly interrupted himself and shouted:
“Oh shit.”
Those were the last words he ever spoke.
The line stayed open, but Brandon said nothing more. His parents hung up and tried calling back, but he didn’t answer. Believing he might still show up at the meeting point — or that his phone had been damaged — they waited until 6:30 AM to report him missing.
Shockingly, they were told it was “his right to be missing.” This, despite the fact he had been on the phone with them when he vanished.
The Search for Brandon Swanson
Later that morning, police began searching but found no sign of Brandon or his car. With help from the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, investigators obtained Brandon’s phone records. His calls had pinged a tower near Taunton, along State Highway 68 — nowhere near Lynd.
This shifted the entire search area.
Brandon’s car was eventually found in a ditch near the Lincoln County line, a mile north of Highway 68. Search dogs were deployed immediately.
Dogs tracked a three‑mile scent trail:
- From the car
- To an abandoned farm
- Down to the Yellow Medicine River
- Across the river
- Up the opposite bank
- Until the scent was lost
During the call, Brandon had mentioned seeing lights, fences, and water. Investigators believe the lights he saw were likely from the Taunton grain elevator.
Theories
This case is one of the strangest on record.
If Brandon fell into the Yellow Medicine River, that could explain the sudden “oh shit” and the phone going silent. His phone wasn’t waterproof, so immersion could have killed the microphone while still allowing the line to remain connected — which matches what his parents experienced.
But there are problems:
- Searchers placed barriers downstream to catch remains or belongings — nothing was found.
- Dogs tracked him out of the river, suggesting he made it across.
- He was a local. How did he misjudge his location by 25 miles?
- If he succumbed to hypothermia after crossing the river, why has no trace ever surfaced?
Brandon was within five miles of the tower that pinged his phone. The map of where he thought he was versus where he actually was is baffling.
The most logical explanation is that he slipped down the riverbank, fell in, got out, and continued walking until he succumbed to the cold. But even that doesn’t fully explain the total lack of evidence.
